Plenary session with Prof. Dr. Réne Orij

Prof. Dr. René Orij of Nyenrode Business University was first a banker and became a professor during a quest for social added value. He specializes in sustainability reporting where he emphasizes the importance of sincerity and transparency, coupled with chain responsibility.

The company that is honest and open about its impact on people and the environment in all places where impact is felt thus lays the foundation of its right to exist. He argues that honest and transparent reporting is crucial for stakeholder trust, which is necessary to ensure a company's long-term right to exist. During his session, he talks more about the ideal way to achieve this.

According to Orij, European regulations, with their focus on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the associated European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), are going to help us do that.

Essent on its way to the CSRD

From fiscal year 2024, E.ON, Essent's shareholder, will report according to the guidelines of the CSRD. Preparations for this started several years ago.

Essent is keeping up with these developments and delivering a growing set of ESG KPIs, more and more of which are tested by the auditor on the basis of reasonable assurance. However, the reliable and timely delivery of the KPIs is not without controversy. The Essent organization calls for a flexible approach and the assignment of decentralized responsibilities, while central control helps ensure rapid implementation.

During this session Joris van Dam (Finance Director at Essent) as principal for the ESG Reporting project and Marcel van Ooijen (from Fagro) as Project Lead ESG Reporting a.i. takes you through Essent's journey towards becoming CSRD-proof.

CSRD in practice by Fagro and Ecocharting

Consulting firm Fagro has been preparing for the advent of the CSRD and its implications for its clients since 2022. A dedicated project team has been set up for this, consisting of business managers and several young and more experienced consultants. Partly due to intensive preparation, Fagro has currently built up a nice proposition and assignment portfolio in the field of the CSRD.

For more than a year, Fagro has been working with Ecocharting in CSRD implementation. This is a software platform developed specifically for the CSRD that allows companies to go through and record the implementation digitally. Instead of reinventing the wheel themselves, it allows companies to follow a pragmatic step-by-step approach that seamlessly follows the guidelines.

Theo Lambooij (CSRD project manager at Fagro) and Joris de Bruijn (co-founder Ecocharting) will interactively share practical experiences with CSRD and Ecocharting during this joint presentation.
